Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Keswick is the northern hub of the Lake District: a small market town of about 4,700 people at the head of Derwentwater, under Skiddaw. There is no railway station, so you arrive by bus or car. Walkers use it as a base for days on the fells; everyone else gets a lake, a theatre, small museums and outdoor shops. Two nights covers the town and one big walk; three or more lets you add Borrowdale, Buttermere or Catbells.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk: Market Square to the lake shore is about 10 minutes. Keswick Launch boats call at seven jetties on Derwentwater and let you shorten a lakeside walk. Local buses run to Borrowdale, Buttermere, Penrith and other Lakes villages; check seasonal timetables before relying on an evening service. A car helps for the passes and valleys, but parking in town is tight on fine days.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Buttermere and Honister Pass

go

Door to door: About 1 h by car from Keswick

Bus or car over Honister Pass from Borrowdale

Lake circuit is short and level; the pass road is steep and narrow.

Catbells and Hawse End

go

Door to door: About 45 min to the jetty, 1–1.5 h up

Keswick Launch to Hawse End jetty, then walk up

Most-climbed local fell; wear shoes with grip for the worn rock.

Mirehouse and gardens

go

Door to door: About 15 min by car

Car or bus north on the A591

House opens only some afternoons; gardens daily in season. Check before going.

Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum

caution

Door to door: About 15 min by car

Car or bus east on the A66

Small site with a short heritage railway; check running days.

Penrith

go

Door to door: About 45–50 min

Bus from Keswick to Penrith station

Useful for mainline trains; ruined castle and shops in town.

Carlisle

go

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

Bus to Penrith, then train north

Cathedral and castle; a half-day city change from the fells.

Bowness-on-Windermere

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min by car

Car over Kirkstone or via Ambleside; buses are slow

Busy in summer; better as an overnight than a rushed return.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Market Square, Main Street, St John's Street)

Walk to pubs, shops and the lake road; no station, so buses drop on Main Street. Few places have parking.

Riverside grid (Southey, Helvellyn, Eskin streets)

Quiet B&B streets 5–10 min walk from the square and Fitz Park.

Station Road and Fitz Park

Near the museum, pool and riverside path; good for the YHA and easy lake access.

Portinscale and Braithwaite

Village bases 1–2 miles out; cheaper parking, need a car or bus for the town.

Borrowdale (Grange, Rosthwaite, Seatoller)

Valley guesthouses and hostels; quiet, 15–30 min drive south, limited evening food.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are fell weather, navigation and footwear. Tell someone your route, carry a map and waterproofs, and call 999 for mountain rescue.
  • No railway station: the nearest mainline stops are Penrith and Oxenholme, then a bus or taxi.
  • Parking is limited on busy days; some streets use free disc parking with a time limit, so carry a disc and check signs.
  • Fell weather changes fast: carry waterproofs, a map and a charged phone even for short walks.
  • Catbells and similar fells see injuries from trainers and sandals on worn rock; wear proper shoes.
  • Mobile signal is patchy in valleys; 5G has not reached the area.
  • Book B&Bs and tables for weekends and school holidays well ahead.
