Keswick
Base here 2–3 nights if you walk: fells and Derwentwater start at the edge of town. Skip it if you want city sights or a train station.
Keswick is the northern hub of the Lake District: a small market town of about 4,700 people at the head of Derwentwater, under Skiddaw. There is no railway station, so you arrive by bus or car. Walkers use it as a base for days on the fells; everyone else gets a lake, a theatre, small museums and outdoor shops. Two nights covers the town and one big walk; three or more lets you add Borrowdale, Buttermere or Catbells.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk: Market Square to the lake shore is about 10 minutes. Keswick Launch boats call at seven jetties on Derwentwater and let you shorten a lakeside walk. Local buses run to Borrowdale, Buttermere, Penrith and other Lakes villages; check seasonal timetables before relying on an evening service. A car helps for the passes and valleys, but parking in town is tight on fine days.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- No railway station: the nearest mainline stops are Penrith and Oxenholme, then a bus or taxi.
- Parking is limited on busy days; some streets use free disc parking with a time limit, so carry a disc and check signs.
- Fell weather changes fast: carry waterproofs, a map and a charged phone even for short walks.
- Catbells and similar fells see injuries from trainers and sandals on worn rock; wear proper shoes.
- Mobile signal is patchy in valleys; 5G has not reached the area.
- Book B&Bs and tables for weekends and school holidays well ahead.
A low-crime small town; the real risks are fell weather, navigation and footwear. Tell someone your route, carry a map and waterproofs, and call 999 for mountain rescue.
