Fukuoka is Kyushu's largest city and its Shinkansen gateway, built around Hakata tonkotsu ramen and open-air yatai food stalls that set up along the Naka River each evening. It is compact enough to walk between Hakata Station and Tenjin, and its airport is unusually close to the centre for a major Japanese city.

Getting around
Two subway lines and buses cover the city, and Hakata Station to Tenjin is a short, flat ride or a 25-minute walk. Shinkansen and JR lines fan out across the rest of Kyushu, and a ferry runs from Hakata port to Busan, South Korea, in about 3 hours.
