Prestwick is a small Ayrshire coast town of about 14,700 people, 40–50 minutes by train from Glasgow, built around an airport that was once a transatlantic stop. Its draw is golf: the Links Old Course hosted the first 12 Open Championships, 1860–1872. The town itself is a short strip of Main Street pubs, a beach and a station; most travellers pass through on the way to Ayr, Troon or the Arran ferry.

Getting around

The town is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes, and the airport is a walk from the north side if you are not loaded with bags. Trains run from Glasgow Central via Paisley, Kilwinning, Irvine and Troon to Prestwick Airport, Prestwick Town and Ayr: about four an hour Monday–Saturday (two of them slow), two an hour on Sunday, last train around 23:00. Stagecoach West buses X77 (Glasgow–Prestwick–Ayr, every 30 min Mon–Sat, hourly Sun), 14 (Irvine–Troon–Prestwick–Ayr) and 585 (Largs–Ardrossan–Prestwick–Ayr) serve the coast road. Taxis are limited; book ahead if you need one.

Safety

A quiet small town where the practical risks are coastal weather, wind and rain that change fast, and a thin taxi supply on weekend nights: book ahead and keep a walkable fallback.
  • Prestwick Town station has a steep ramp to the Glasgow-bound platform; step-free access is better at the airport halt.
  • The half-price rail deal for airport passengers is not available for Prestwick Town tickets.
  • Shaw Monument and Bruce's Well are fenced off and cannot be entered.
  • Prestwick Airport has a small flight schedule: check your route before booking around it.
