Katowice
Give Katowice 1–2 nights: Silesian Museum and Nikiszowiec in a day, then use it as a cheap rail and bus hub for Kraków, Ostrava and the GZM cities.
Katowice is the centre of the 2.3-million Metropolis GZM, an industrial city that rebuilt itself around museums, a convention centre and music rather than old-town prettiness. Sights sit within a kilometre or two of Rynek and the railway station, so one full day covers the core and a second adds Nikiszowiec and a mine or zinc-works museum. It is also the cheapest big-city base in southern Poland and a rail junction for Kraków, Wrocław, Ostrava, Prague and Vienna.

Most central sights are within 1–2 km of Rynek or the station and the pavements are broad and level, so walk. ZTM Metropolia runs the trams and buses across the GZM cities on one ticket system: 20 min 4.60 zł, 40 min 5.60 zł, 90 min or full route 6.60 zł, day pass 12 zł (2024 fares, check 2026). Validate on boarding — an unvalidated ticket counts as no ticket. Buy from kiosks, machines or POP points; only the 90-minute ticket is sold on board, and tram drivers sell nothing.
