Saffron Walden is a small Essex market town of about 15,500 people, 15 miles south of Cambridge and 46 miles north of London. Its one big draw is Audley End House and Gardens, an English Heritage property two miles west of the centre. The town itself is a compact, walkable grid of timbered houses, a Tuesday and Saturday market, two turf mazes and a free art gallery. Most travellers come for a day from Cambridge or London, or break a Stansted Airport layover here. One night is enough; two nights only if you want slow country walks.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Audley End station is about 2 miles west of the centre: use bus 59/590, 301 or 319/320/321, or a taxi. Local taxis include Crocus Cars and Abel Cars (check current numbers). App-Bike e-bikes are for Uttlesford residents only, so visitors cannot hire them.

Safety

Very safe for a town of its size; the real risks are uneven pavements, dark lanes after pub closing and fast traffic on the B184 and B1052 (≈ US$1,500) into town. Keep to lit streets at night and use a taxi after the last bus.
  • Audley End station is 2 miles from town: do not walk it with luggage in the rain, take the bus or a taxi.
  • Audley End House has seasonal opening: Apr–Oct daily, Nov–Mar Wednesday–Sunday, and some rooms close in winter. Check before you travel.
  • The Fry Art Gallery opens April–October only.
  • Saffron Walden Museum closes 30 minutes early in November–February.
  • Rural buses are infrequent in the evening and on Sundays: check the last bus back from the station.
