Canberra

Give Canberra 2 nights if you want the national museums and Parliament; 1 night is enough for a quick loop. Skip it if you only have a week on the east coast.

Canberra is Australia's purpose-built capital, a low-rise city of national museums, galleries and government buildings wrapped around Lake Burley Griffin. It is not a beach or nightlife town: the draw is free institutions, wide bike paths and cool-climate wine country an hour away. Most visitors come for two days, often as a stop between Sydney and Melbourne, and find the city quieter and greener than expected.

  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Getting around

Canberra is spread out and built for cars. Public buses (Transport Canberra) cover the centre and town centres but run less often on weekends. Cycling is excellent: shared paths loop the lake and link most sights. Taxis and rideshare are easy to book but fares add up over a day.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Civic (City)

CBD with malls, restaurants and the main bus interchange; best for first-timers without a car.

Acton

University district next to the lake, museums and botanic gardens; quiet at night.

North Canberra

Residential, close to the Australian War Memorial; good for drivers.

South Canberra

Parliamentary Triangle and embassy belt; mostly government and some hotels.

Belconnen

Northern town centre with cheaper beds and shopping; 20–30 min drive to Civic.

Watch out

Safety

Generally safe. Main risks: summer heat spikes (>34°C (93°F)), winter ice on paths, and sparse bus service after dark (last buses often leave Civic before 21:00; rely on taxis/rideshare). Stick to lit areas.
  • Summer can hit 35°C (95°F)+; carry water and plan indoor stops midday.
  • Winter nights drop below 0°C (32°F); layer up even if days look sunny.
  • Many national attractions are free but close by 17:00; check individual sites for late openings.
  • Morning fog at Canberra Airport from May to Sep can delay flights until about 10:00.
