Canberra is Australia's purpose-built capital, a low-rise city of national museums, galleries and government buildings wrapped around Lake Burley Griffin. It is not a beach or nightlife town: the draw is free institutions, wide bike paths and cool-climate wine country an hour away. Most visitors come for two days, often as a stop between Sydney and Melbourne, and find the city quieter and greener than expected.

Get around
Canberra is spread out and built for cars. Public buses (Transport Canberra) cover the centre and town centres but run less often on weekends. Cycling is excellent: shared paths loop the lake and link most sights. Taxis and rideshare are easy to book but fares add up over a day.

Language
English everywhere, with a fast, informal Australian style: shortened words (arvo, servo, brekkie), 'mate' for anyone and irony as default. Place names across the country come from Aboriginal languages, and signs increasingly use dual names.
- Ask what a place is called in the local language on tours; many parks now use dual names (Uluru / Ayers Rock, K'gari / Fraser Island).
- 'How are you going?' is a greeting, not a question needing a full answer.
