Sulmona is a 24,000-person city in the Abruzzo mountains at about 400 m, ringed by the Majella and Morrone ranges, roughly halfway between Rome and Pescara. Its compact medieval centre is walkable in half a day, and it works as a low-cost base for the villages and trails around it. The train from Rome is slow and scenic; the bus is faster.

Getting around

The old town is flat and walkable; from the station turn right and walk about 15 minutes to Corso Ovidio. Local buses run to the station and nearby towns, tickets from tabacchi; buses do not run on Sundays. A car is the practical choice for the Majella villages and trailheads.

Safety

Sulmona is a low-crime small city; the real risks are mountain weather, narrow roads with local drivers, and winter ice at altitude. Standard precautions apply at night around the station.
  • Sunday buses are rare or absent: plan arrivals and departures on other days.
  • Park outside the old town; there is a car park near the fire station (Vigili del fuoco) with a short walk up.
  • Mountain weather changes fast; carry a layer even in summer.
  • Many small restaurants close one day a week and shut between lunch and dinner: check before walking over.
