Sulmona
Give Sulmona one full day and one night: old town, confetti shops and the aqueduct on foot, then hill towns by bus or car. Skip it only if you have no car and no patience for slow trains.
Sulmona is a 24,000-person city in the Abruzzo mountains at about 400 m, ringed by the Majella and Morrone ranges, roughly halfway between Rome and Pescara. Its compact medieval centre is walkable in half a day, and it works as a low-cost base for the villages and trails around it. The train from Rome is slow and scenic; the bus is faster.

Get around
The old town is flat and walkable; from the station turn right and walk about 15 minutes to Corso Ovidio. Local buses run to the station and nearby towns, tickets from tabacchi; buses do not run on Sundays. A car is the practical choice for the Majella villages and trailheads.
