Bridgnorth

Give Bridgnorth one day and one night: the Cliff Railway, the leaning castle keep and the steam railway fill a day; a second night is optional for a slower visit.

Bridgnorth is a small Shropshire market town split into High Town and Low Town on the River Severn, with a castle keep that leans further than Pisa's tower and England's oldest funicular linking the two levels. There is no National Rail station: you arrive by bus or by preserved steam railway, so it works as a day trip from Telford or Shrewsbury or as a quiet one-night stop.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
  • Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
  • United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
  • United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
  • United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.

Getting around

The centre is walkable but steep: High Town sits on the cliff, Low Town on the river. The Cliff Railway covers the climb in about a minute. Buses 9, 113–116 and 297 link the town with Telford, Ironbridge, Wolverhampton and Kidderminster; the Severn Valley Railway runs to Kidderminster on running days.

Low Town (Underhill Street and the riverside)

Quieter, close to the Severn and the Cliff Railway base; a short climb or funicular ride to High Town.

Eardington and the A442 edge

Cheaper rooms and parking; you need a car or a bus into town.

Watch out

Safety

A small town with the usual UK emergency numbers: 999 or 112 for police, fire and ambulance, 101 for non-urgent police, 111 for NHS non-urgent. The steps between High and Low Town are steep and uneven, and riverside paths can be wet after rain: take care, especially after dark.
  • No National Rail station: the nearest are Telford (about 12.5 mi), Shrewsbury (about 15 mi) and Wolverhampton (about 18.7 mi).
  • The Severn Valley Railway does not run every day: check the timetable before you build a day around it.
  • The castle keep and the Cliff Railway are on the cliff edge: keep children back from the drop.
  • Some small cafés and shops are cash only: carry a little cash.
