Hamar
Give Hamar one night as a lake-and-rail stop between Oslo and Lillehammer: Domkirkeodden and the railway museum, then move on.
Hamar sits on Lake Mjøsa, 1 h 15 min by train from Oslo and about an hour from Gardermoen airport, on the line to Lillehammer and Trondheim. It hosted speed skating, figure skating and short track at the 1994 Winter Olympics. The sights are two clusters along the lake shore, so a single night or a half-day stop covers it; skiers use it as a gateway to Trysil.
