Haßberge

Half a day to a day: hike the nature park, visit a castle ruin and drink at a brewery. Not a base — stay in Bamberg or Würzburg and day-trip.

Haßberge is a rural district in Lower Franconia, known for the Haßberge Nature Park with its scattered castle ruins and well-marked walking trails. The main towns — Haßfurt, Zeil am Main, Hofheim, Ebern, Königsberg and Eltmann — are small. Most visitors come for a half-day hike and a brewery stop, then move on.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Entry rules depend on your passport. Full visa guide

Getting around

Car is easiest: the nature park and castle ruins are spread out. Buses and trains connect the towns (VGN tariff), but frequencies are low on weekends. A bicycle is good for the Main valley flat sections.

Haßfurt

Largest town; train station, shops, a few hotels. Good for a night if you want to start hiking early.

Zeil am Main

Smaller, quieter; the Brauereigasthof Zur Alten Freyung has rooms.

Maroldsweisach

Rural; Brauerei-Gaststätte Hartleb offers cheap rooms and a brewery.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The main risks are getting lost on trails (download a map) and slippery paths after rain. Brewery car parks can be muddy.
  • Many castle ruins are free but have no facilities: bring water and snacks.
  • Trail markers in the nature park are good but not always in English; download a map offline.
  • Brewery restaurants often close one day a week (check the hours).
  • Last trains from Haßfurt to Würzburg or Bamberg run around 23:00; check VGN for weekend changes.

Say or show

  • Hallo — Hello (hah-loh)
  • Danke — Thank you (dahn-keh)
  • Ein Bier, bitte — One beer, please (eyn beer, bit-teh)
  • Wo ist der Weg? — Where is the trail? (voh ist der vayk?)
  • Wie viel kostet das? — How much is it? (vee feel kost-et das?)
  • Sprechen Sie Englisch? — Do you speak English? (shpreh-khen zee eng-lish?)

Most people under 50 speak some English; in rural breweries, a few German phrases help.
