Haßberge
Half a day to a day: hike the nature park, visit a castle ruin and drink at a brewery. Not a base — stay in Bamberg or Würzburg and day-trip.
Haßberge is a rural district in Lower Franconia, known for the Haßberge Nature Park with its scattered castle ruins and well-marked walking trails. The main towns — Haßfurt, Zeil am Main, Hofheim, Ebern, Königsberg and Eltmann — are small. Most visitors come for a half-day hike and a brewery stop, then move on.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- Many castle ruins are free but have no facilities: bring water and snacks.
- Trail markers in the nature park are good but not always in English; download a map offline.
- Brewery restaurants often close one day a week (check the hours).
- Last trains from Haßfurt to Würzburg or Bamberg run around 23:00; check VGN for weekend changes.
Very safe. The main risks are getting lost on trails (download a map) and slippery paths after rain. Brewery car parks can be muddy.
