Enköping is a small Mälaren-side town of about 20,000 people, 40–50 minutes by train from Stockholm on the Mälarbanan line. Its pull is green space — the town is known for its parks — plus a local museum, a small art hall and Bronze Age rock carvings a short drive out. Central streets are walkable; the castles and petroglyphs need a car. Most travellers see it in half a day on the way to Västerås or Uppsala, and one night is enough if you want the manor gardens.

The centre is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Buses reach the station and town centre. For Ekolsund, Grönsöö, Kvekgården and the Boglösa rock carvings you need a car or a taxi; distances are 6–20 km.

Safety

Enköping is a low-risk small town; the real issues are winter ice on pavements, dark unlit paths along the stream after nightfall, and manor or carving sites reached by unlit country roads — drive carefully and watch for moose at dusk.
  • Many manor interiors open only on guided tours, and only in the warmer half of the year: check dates before you travel.
  • Some sights and summer restaurants close outside Jun–Aug.
  • Rock carving sites are open-air and unsigned in places; bring the exact location and wear shoes for grass.
  • Tipping is not expected; service is included, round up or add 5–10% for good table service.
