Sigtuna was Sweden's royal seat from the 10th to the 13th century and is now a small lakeside town of about 2,600 people on Lake Mälaren, 7 km from Märsta station and one bus ride from Arlanda. The old core is one street, Stora Gatan, with runestones, three church ruins, a tiny town hall and a museum. Two to three hours covers it on foot; a night makes sense only if you want the lake at dusk or a Christmas-market Sunday.

Getting around

The old town is flat and walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end; no car needed. Buses 570 and 575 link Sigtuna with Märsta station, where commuter trains run to Stockholm. Bus 579 connects Arlanda directly. A Strömma boat runs between Stockholm and Sigtuna in season, with a stop at Skokloster.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real issues are icy winter pavements, dark unlit paths to the beaches, and the lake itself: do not walk on the ice without local advice.
  • There is no train station in Sigtuna: the nearest is Märsta, 7 km east, then bus 570 or 575.
  • Museum and guided-tour hours are seasonal (roughly Jun–Aug daily, other months shorter): check before you travel for a specific sight.
  • The Christmas market runs only on the four last Sundays before Christmas, 11:00–16:00.
  • Winter paths and the lakeside can be icy; the lake is not safe to walk on without local advice.
