Cowra
Give Cowra one full day and one night: the Japanese Garden, the war cemeteries and the breakout story are the reason to stop, not the town itself.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
- Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
- Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
- Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.
Cowra is a town of about 10,000 in the Central West of New South Wales, four hours' drive west of Sydney. Its draw is a single, serious story: a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp, the mass breakout of 5 August 1944, and the reconciliation that followed. The Japanese Garden, the only Japanese war cemetery in Australia and the visitor centre's hologram theatre carry it. Everything else is a country town with motels on the main street.

Getting around
Cowra is a driving town. The sights sit 2–4 km apart on the northern edge, so a car or a taxi covers them in a morning. The town centre itself is flat and walkable: Kendal Street for food and beds, the visitor centre at Olympic Park for the breakout display. Regional coaches stop in town but do not serve the garden or cemeteries.

Watch out
Safety
- Distances are real: Sydney is about 4 h by road, Canberra about 3 h. Do not treat Cowra as a Sydney day trip.
- Summer inland heat is serious; carry water and do the cemeteries early.
- Cellar doors are small and often open only on weekends or by appointment: ring ahead.
- The regional coach runs twice a day and seats must be reserved; miss the afternoon service and you are stranded.
