Cowra is a town of about 10,000 in the Central West of New South Wales, four hours' drive west of Sydney. Its draw is a single, serious story: a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp, the mass breakout of 5 August 1944, and the reconciliation that followed. The Japanese Garden, the only Japanese war cemetery in Australia and the visitor centre's hologram theatre carry it. Everything else is a country town with motels on the main street.
