Little Valley is the seat of Cattaraugus County: a village of about 1,700 people on Route 242 with one main street, one tavern, one small market and a half-mile dirt racetrack. It is not a sightseeing town. It works as a cheap, quiet base for the Pat McGee Trail, the county fair in late July and early August, and race nights, with Ellicottville's ski hills 13 km north and the I-86 expressway 15 km south.

Getting around

You need a car. The village centre is walkable in 10 minutes end to end; everything else — fairgrounds, speedway, Horse Park, both B&Bs — is 3–13 km out on Routes 242 and 353 with no useful local transit. Fill up in Salamanca or Olean; the village has no fuel station on the main strip.

Safety

Quiet and low-crime by US standards; the real risks are winter driving on Route 242, deer on the road at dusk, and walking the unlit road shoulders after dark.
  • Cash is king at the fair and the speedway; some gates and concession stands do not take cards.
  • Winter roads ice early on Route 242 and the county hills; snow tyres or all-season tread and daylight driving are the safe call.
  • Cell coverage thins on the back roads toward Mansfield and the trailheads.
  • The fair and race nights fill every bed within 20 km: book weeks ahead for late July and early August.
