The Danakil Depression is the Afar lowland north of the Great Rift: salt flats below sea level, sulphur springs at Dallol, a lava lake at Erta Ale and camel caravans still cutting salt by hand. It is the hottest place on earth averaged over the year, with almost no rain and almost no visitor infrastructure. In practice every route runs with a licensed operator, a guide and an armed guard, and the security picture in northern Ethiopia changes fast — the historic north has been under advice against all travel. Treat it as a 3–4 day expedition from Mekele, not a park you drop into, and only after your government's advisory changes.

Accessibility
- The Dallol approach ends with a 15-minute walk over uneven salt crust; the rest is vehicle-based but very rough.
- The Erta Ale climb is 2.5–3 hours each way over loose basalt and is not suitable for limited mobility; camels can carry riders part of the way for a fee.
- No wheelchair-accessible facilities exist anywhere on the route.
Visiting lightly
- Buy from the small shops in Berhale and Hamad-Ela and pay the salt workers a fair price for photographs.
- Take every piece of rubbish back to Mekele; the desert has no collection.
- Choose operators that keep group sizes small and do not drive across untouched salt crust.
- Water is trucked in — use it sparingly and never ask for a wash at camp.

What are the best hikes in Danakil Depression?
The Erta Ale crater climb is the main walk: 2.5–3 hours each way from the base camp, done at night, with a lava lake at the top. The Dallol approach ends with a 15-minute walk over salt crust to the sulphur springs, and the salt canyons southwest of Dallol are an easy hour on foot. Everything else is done by 4x4.
When is the best time to visit Danakil Depression?
November to February. Daytime temperatures sit near 30 °C in the shade and the roads are dry. March to October is extreme, approaching 45–47 °C, and many operators stop running tours in the hottest months. Rain is rare at any time of year.

Closed boots, long loose clothing, a scarf or buff, sunglasses, high-factor sunscreen, 4–5 litres of water per day, a head torch for the Erta Ale night walk, a sleeping bag liner and cash in birr for the small shops and camel rides.
