Zwickau is a compact Saxon town of about 90,000 with a medieval core, a car-making past (Horch, Audi, Trabant) and a Volkswagen plant that still builds cars. The old town is walkable in two hours; the August Horch Museum is the reason most visitors come. It works as a day trip from Chemnitz, Leipzig or Dresden, or as one night on a Saxony loop.

Getting around

The old town is pedestrianised and small: walk it. Two tram lines (3 and 4) and buses cover the districts, but neither tram reaches the Hauptbahnhof. Tram 4 runs from the centre towards Pölbitz and stops near the August Horch Museum. Parking garages ring the old town, generally about €1 per hour.

Safety

Zwickau is a calm, ordinary German town; the usual city rules apply. Watch for bicycles on shared paths, keep to lit streets around the station at night, and carry some cash as smaller places may not take cards.
  • The August Horch Museum closes on Mondays; last entry is 30 min before closing.
  • Most museum information is in German only; an audio guide costs extra.
  • Volkswagen plant tours need a booked appointment, groups of 10–25, minimum age 14.
