  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.

Dubbo is the hub of the NSW Central West, a four-hour drive or a daily train from Sydney, and it exists on most itineraries for one reason: Taronga Western Plains Zoo, an open-range zoo you cover by bike or car. The town itself is small and walkable, with a gold-rush-era gaol museum, a 1840s homestead and a good pub strip on Macquarie Street. Two nights is the honest answer; three if you add the observatory or a day trip to Mudgee or Parkes.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable. The zoo is about 5 km from the middle of town: taxi, the Dubbo Buslines service (roughly eight weekday trips, fewer at weekends), or the off-road Tracker Riley Cycleway if you have a bike. A car makes the day trips possible; without one you are limited to town and the zoo.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Macquarie Street and the town centre

Walk to the gaol, pubs and cafés; best if you arrive by train and have no car.

Cobra Street and Whylandra Street

The motel strip on the highway into town; drive-up rooms, pool, parking at the door.

Near the zoo (Obley Road)

Quieter and closest to the zoo gate; you need a car for everything else.

Watch out

Safety

Dubbo is a normal regional city and fine by day; the centre is quiet at night and some blocks around the railway and late-night pubs are best walked in company. The bigger risks are heat, long empty drives and wildlife on the road after dusk.
  • Summer heat: plan the zoo for the early morning and carry more water than you think you need.
  • The zoo is large — 5 km of loop road. Hire a bike or drive it rather than walking the whole thing.
  • Regional train and coach seats sell out around holidays; book the XPT ahead.
  • Town shuts early: many kitchens stop taking orders by 20:30–21:00.

Dubbo is a small city: keep the emergency numbers and your accommodation address on paper, because mobile coverage thins out on the highways west.

  4. Heat and storm fixtures so the zoo and day-trip gates can go green.
