Mito is the capital of Ibaraki and the old castle town of the Mito Tokugawa, one of the three branches that could supply a shogun. It is on the JR Joban Line, 65–75 min from Ueno by limited express, and its two headline sights — Kairakuen garden and the Kōdōkan school — sit within a 30-minute walk of the station. Most travellers pass through for a night or a day; the plum blossom in late February and March is the one time to plan around.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Kairakuen is about a 30-min walk from the station south exit along the Sakuragawa. Buses leave from terminal 6 on the north side for the garden, but Mito's buses do not take Suica or Pasmo — Ibaraki Kōtsu uses its own Ibappi card. A bicycle is the fastest way to cover the riverside paths. Taxis flag from about ¥660.

Watch out

Safety

Mito is a calm prefectural capital and feels safe day and night. The real risks are summer heat, the walk back from Kairakuen after dark, and bars with no posted prices: ask the total before you sit.
  • Buses do not accept Suica or Pasmo; carry the Ibappi card or cash.
  • Kairakuen Station on the Joban Line opens only during plum blossom season.
  • Natto is fermented soybeans with a strong smell and sticky texture: try a small portion before ordering a set.
  • Summer is hot and humid; October still brings heavy rain days.
