Hyden is a 377-person Wheatbelt farming town whose only reason to exist on your itinerary is Wave Rock, a 110 m granite wall 4 km east of town. There is no public transport to the rock, no commercial flights, and one bus a week. Come with a car, sleep one night, and treat the drive as the cost of the visit.

Getting around

You need your own vehicle; 2WD is fine on sealed roads. Town centre to Wave Rock is 4 km east, Hippo's Yawn another 1 km, The Humps 18 km north on Lovering Road. Fuel up in town: the self-serve on the highway runs 24 h.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are heat, isolation and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk. Carry water, fuel up in town, and do not leave the sealed roads without telling someone.
  • No mobile coverage outside the townsite, and Telstra is the only network that works here.
  • Sites are privately managed: Wave Rock charges per vehicle, pay by coins at the kiosk or ticket machine.
  • Do not drive onto the lakeside at Lake Magic; vehicles bog and recovery is charged.
  • Driver fatigue on the return leg to Perth is the real risk; start early and share the driving.
  • Roads to outlying rocks such as King Rock are unsealed and rough; tell someone before you go.
