Kurseong sits at about 1,450 m on the Hill Cart Road and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, roughly 45 km from Siliguri and 35 km short of Darjeeling. It is a small, walkable hill town built around tea: Makaibari, Castleton and Ambotia gardens are here, and the tea is among the most expensive sold anywhere. There is little sightseeing beyond the estates, the railway archive and a couple of viewpoints, so most travellers use it for a single quiet night on the way up or down the hills.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk, but it is built on a ridge, so expect steep lanes and stairs. Shared mini-vans run along the main roads and display their destination; vans marked duty or reserved will not stop. A taxi from the railway station down to Makaibari is short and cheap (about ₹20–60). For estates outside town, agree the fare or the return time before you set off.

Watch out

Safety

Kurseong is a small, low-crime hill town and feels safe on foot by day. The real risks are monsoon landslides and road conditions, steep unlit lanes after dark, and altitude if you have come straight up from the plains.
  • Monsoon (Jun–Sep) brings landslides and road closures on Hill Cart Road; check road status before travelling.
  • The DHR archive at the station is often locked during posted hours: ask the station master.
  • Tea-estate factory tours run on estate schedules, not fixed tourist hours: confirm the day before.
  • Hill roads are winding; if you get motion sick, take the front seat and travel by day.
