Märsta is a commuter town of about 27,000 people in Sigtuna Municipality, 35 km north of Stockholm and 4 km from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport. It has a rail station on the Stockholm-Uppsala line, a small shopping centre and two 17th-century palaces nearby. Almost nobody needs more than a night here; the airport and the palaces are the reason to stop.

Getting around

The centre is small and walkable; you will not need a car inside town. SL commuter trains run to Stockholm and Uppsala, and SL tickets cost less than SJ tickets on the same line, though SL trains stop more often. Buses cover the residential districts. For the palaces and the lake you want a bike, a bus or a car.

Watch out

Safety

Märsta is a normal Swedish commuter town and is safe by day and evening; the real issues are winter ice, dark afternoons and the station area late at night. Standard city sense is enough.
  • Märsta is a transport town, not a sightseeing town: plan the day around Sigtuna, Rosersberg or Stockholm instead.
  • Some palace and museum opening hours are seasonal and change; check the official sites before you travel.
  • Winter brings ice and short daylight; pavements can be slippery from Nov to Mar.
  • Airport-area hotels are not all within walking distance of the station — confirm the shuttle before booking.
