Targovishte is a quiet provincial city on the Sofia–Varna rail and road corridor, 110 km inland from the Black Sea. Its sights are modest and spread between a scattered old quarter and a ruined medieval fortress 7 km out of town. It works as a rest stop on a longer Bulgaria trip, not as a base.

Getting around

The centre is compact and flat, so walk it. Five minibus lines cover the city; fares are paid to the driver in cash, so carry small change. Line 4 from the railway station is the only public transport that reaches the fortress ruins and the hiking paths south of town. Taxis are metered with a municipal price cap; ask the total before you sit.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime city. The real risks are the unlit walk from the railway station, stray dogs on the edge of town, and summer heat at the fortress ruins: go in daylight and carry water.
  • The railway station is a 20-min walk from the centre through an industrial area; buses 3, 4 and 10 run the route.
  • Minibus schedules are online and in Bulgarian only, and no route map is published; ask your host which line to take.
  • The ethnographic museum house has been closed for renovation; check before you count on it.
  • The fortress ruins are 7 km (4.3 mi) out with no shade and no facilities; go in the morning and carry water.
