Ithaca is a small Gratiot County seat of about 3,100 people on US-127, 35 minutes north of Lansing. Its draw is a compact National Register downtown — the 1902 Gratiot County Courthouse, the old fire hall, a handful of shops and cafés — plus Woodland Park and summer events. Two to three hours on foot covers it; there is no reason to stay overnight unless you are here for the county fair or a car show.

Getting around

Walk. Downtown Ithaca is a few blocks along Business US-127 (E. Center St.), flat and easy on foot or by bike; sidewalks run through the city limits. A car is needed for Woodland Park, the fairgrounds, the country club and anything outside town — there is no local bus service.

Safety

Very low crime for a US small town; the real risks are winter driving on US-127, deer on rural roads at dusk and long gaps between open businesses. 911 works everywhere.
  • Small-town hours: many downtown shops and cafés close by mid-afternoon and on Sundays — check before you detour.
  • No scheduled air service at Gratiot Community Airport; do not plan a flight into AMN.
  • Winter ice and snow on US-127 and side streets; drive for the conditions.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on rural Gratiot County roads.
  • Event weekends (car show, fair, motor tour) fill the few local rooms: book ahead or sleep in Alma.
