Tarbert is Harris's main village and ferry terminal, home to about 500 people, a distillery and the island's only cluster of shops, hotels and hostels. The village itself takes an hour on foot; the reason to stay is that it puts the whole of Harris — Luskentyre, the Golden Road, Clisham — within a day's drive, and Lewis within a longer one. Two nights is the working minimum; three if you want a beach day and a hill day without rushing the single-track roads.

Getting around

The village is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. Everything else needs wheels: hire from Car Hire Hebrides at the filling station opposite Harris Hotel. Buses W10 (Tarbert–A859), W11 (Rhenigidale), W12 (Amhuinnsuidhe) and W14 (Scalpay) run Monday–Saturday only, a few times a day, with no Sunday service. Single-track roads have passing places — pull in and let locals past.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are single-track roads, weather that turns fast on the hills, and midges. Tell someone your route before a hill walk and carry a map — signal is patchy.
  • No Sunday buses, and many shops, cafés and the distillery run reduced or no Sunday hours: check before you plan a Sunday move.
  • Fuel up in Tarbert before heading out; filling stations on Harris and Lewis are few and far apart (check).
  • Midges are about on still, damp evenings from June to August; bring repellent and cover up at dusk.
  • Mobile signal is patchy and drops fast outside the village; download maps and ferry tickets before you leave.
  • Book the Uig–Tarbert ferry and any car hire ahead in summer; space is limited and sailings fill (check).
