Franklin Park
Skip as a base unless you need a cheap bed near O'Hare: one half-day for the train tower and Mexican bakeries, or stay 1 night before an early flight.
Franklin Park is a working village west of Chicago, 10 minutes from O'Hare by car, with three Metra stations, a rail yard and a train-culture streak. Its downtown is small and partly under construction, but the Mexican bakeries and taquerias on Grand and Franklin Avenues are the reason to get off the train. Most travellers use it for one night near the airport, or as a half-day stop on the Milwaukee District West line between Chicago and Elgin.

Metra's Milwaukee District West line stops at Franklin Park and Mannheim stations; the North Central Service stops at Belmont Avenue. Trains run to Chicago Union Station, roughly 25–35 min.
