Ocala

Give Ocala 1–2 nights if you want Silver Springs and the horse country; skip it if you only have an Orlando park week.

Ocala sits on I-75 between Gainesville and Orlando, in Marion County horse-farm country. The draw is Silver Springs State Park and the springs and trails of Ocala National Forest, not a downtown sight list. Most travellers pass through on I-75; a single night or a day stop is enough unless you are riding or paddling.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights and springs are spread across the county and buses do not reach most of them. SunTran runs a small city bus network in Ocala. Greyhound and RedCoach stop at the interstate travel centres, not downtown.

Chain hotels clustered off the interstate; easiest with a car and for one night.

Historic square, restaurants and walkable blocks; fewer beds, book ahead.

Silver Springs / SR-40 east

Closest to the state park and the forest; motels and short-term rentals.

Watch out

Safety

Ocala is a normal mid-size Florida city; the real risks are summer heat, storms and wildlife in the springs and forest. Lock the car at trailheads and keep to posted swimming areas.
  • Summer heat and humidity: carry water and start outdoor sights early.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms Jun–Sep; lightning risk on trails and water.
  • Alligators and snakes are present in springs, rivers and forest water; follow posted swimming areas.
  • Distances between springs and trailheads are long: plan fuel and food stops.
