Uusikaupunki is a small wooden-grid town on the Bothnian Sea, founded 1617 and rebuilt to an 1856 plan after fire. It is a summer stop: the old town, the car factory museum and the guest harbour are the reasons to come, and the archipelago cruises to Isokari and Katanpää are the reason to stay a second night. Outside June–August it is quiet and much is shut.

Getting around

The centre is walkable; the old town, market square, guest harbour and both hotels sit within about 1.5 km. Ukikyyti is a shared-ride service inside the centre and its surroundings on weekdays 07:00–21:00 and Saturdays 10:00–14:00, booked through the Matkahuolto app or by phone, €2 for the first passenger and €1 each extra. Taxis are app-based (Valopilkku, 02 Taksi). A car helps for Kalanti, the Automobile Museum and the countryside.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are icy pavements in winter, dark unlit roads outside the centre and the short cruise season: book boats and the Bonk Museum before you travel.
  • No passenger trains on the Uusikaupunki line; buses from Turku are the practical arrival.
  • Cruises to Isokari and Katanpää run only from midsummer to mid-August and need advance booking.
  • Bonk Museum requires an advance reservation.
  • Many restaurants and sights cut hours or close outside summer.
  • Winter roads are icy; headlights are always on and winter tyres are required Dec–Feb.
