Loviisa is a small south-coast town of about 14,500 people, founded in 1745 as a border trading post and renamed after a Swedish queen. Its two 18th-century fortresses, the wooden centre and the Laivasilta harbour fit into a single unhurried day. It sits on the E18 roughly halfway between Helsinki and the Russian border, so it works as a night on a coastal drive rather than a destination in itself.

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. For Plagen beach, Svartholma or Strömfors you need a bike, car or taxi; local buses and a route planner cover the town, and the summer ferry to Svartholma leaves from Laivasilta.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe; the real issues are dark, icy pavements from November to March, deer on the E18 at dusk, and seasonal places being shut when you arrive.
  • The railway through Loviisa has no passenger service; come by bus, car or summer steamer.
  • Svartholma fortress is reached only by seasonal ferry: check sailing days before you plan the day around it.
  • Nuclear plant visits must be arranged in advance; the site is 15 km away and normally viewed from a distance.
  • Many restaurants close on weekends or by late afternoon: check hours the same day.
