Nasushiobara那須塩原市
A half-day stop on the Tohoku Shinkansen: enough time for a pancake lunch and a walk in Shiobara Onsen. Not a base unless you are hiking Kirifuri Highlands.
Nasushiobara is a small city in northern Tochigi, formed in 2005 from Kuroiso, Nishinasuno and Shiobara. It sits on the Tohoku Shinkansen about an hour from Tokyo. Most travellers pass through for the hot-spring town of Shiobara, the Kirifuri Highlands or the pancake house Mori no VoiVoi. The city itself has no major sights; plan a half-day or one night if you want onsen.
