Jaibalito is the smallest settlement on Lake Atitlán and the only one with no road access: you arrive by lancha or on foot along the shore path. There is one lane of paved walkway, a handful of places to eat, and a mixed Maya and foreign-resident community that lives in the same few streets. It suits travellers who want quiet, cheap beds and walking, and it frustrates anyone who wants choice, cash machines or a taxi to the door.

Getting around

On foot. One paved lane runs through the village and tuk-tuks wait at the public dock for bags; they cannot reach the cliffside hotels. The shore path west to Tzununá and east to Santa Cruz la Laguna is the only land route out.

Watch out

Safety

Petty theft is rare and the village is calm; the real risks are the unlit shore path after dark, slippery steps to the cliffside hotels, and having no cash when the power or the boats stop.
  • No road in or out: everything arrives by lancha or on foot.
  • No bank or ATM in the village; bring quetzales from Panajachel.
  • Power and internet cuts are common, often from downed lines.
  • Last lanchas to Panajachel and San Pedro run in the late afternoon: confirm the time at the dock.
  • The shore path is rough, unlit and slippery after rain: do not walk it after dark.
