Batagay is a small settlement on the Yana River in northern Yakutia, home to about 3,800 people and the access point for the Batagaika crater, the largest known permafrost depression. There is no sightseeing town here: you come for the crater, and you need a flight from Yakutsk plus a local guide to do it.

Getting around
The settlement is walkable. The crater is 10 km southeast: go with a local guide or a hired vehicle, not on foot. The Yana highway reaches Batagay and runs on to Verkhoyansk; through traffic works only as a winter road, with a paved section to Ese-Khaya.

Safety
- Medical facilities are basic and the nearest full hospital is in Yakutsk, a flight away.
- The Yana highway is a winter road for most of its length: do not plan a summer drive from Yakutsk.
- Permafrost ground around the crater edge is unstable and actively slumping: stay back from the rim and follow your guide.
- Mobile coverage and card payment are unreliable; carry cash rubles.
