Neuchâtel is a compact French-speaking lake town of about 35,000 people, built on a slope between Lake Neuchâtel and the Jura. The old town, castle and three museums sit within a 15-minute walk of each other, and the lakefront gives you swimming, boat piers and a flat promenade. It works as a one-night stop on the Jura rail line between Geneva, Lausanne and Bern, or as a two-night base for wine villages and the Creux du Van.

The old town is pedestrianised, but the climb from the lakefront to the station is steep — use the funicular or bus 7/9 instead of walking it with luggage.

Safety
- The walk from the lakefront up to the station is steep; take the funicular or bus 7/9 with bags.
- Petty theft and pickpocketing happen more here than in most Swiss towns; watch bags at the station and on lake boats.
- Avoid the Jolimont and Serrières areas after dark.
- Lake water stays cold outside Jul–Aug; check flags and currents before swimming.
- Many small shops close Sunday; the tourist office has shorter winter hours.
