Girvan is a small Ayrshire seaside town of about 6,300 people, 90 minutes by train from Glasgow with a change at Ayr. It has a long sandy beach, a fishing harbour, a 19th-century clock tower and boat trips to Ailsa Craig. Most travellers see it in a day or use it as a quiet one-night stop on the A77 run to Cairnryan ferries. Two nights covers the town, the coast path and a golf or boat trip.

The centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end; the railway station sits about half a mile north of the shops. Buses 58/60 run along the main road and on to Cairnryan and Stranraer. For Turnberry, Maidens or Lendalfoot you want a car, bike or taxi.

Girvan is a quiet, low-crime town and feels safe on foot by day and evening. The real risks are coastal weather, slippery shore rocks and unlit paths after dark.
  • The station has no ticket machines: buy at the office or pay on board.
  • Last train from Glasgow to Girvan departs around 22:00; check the timetable before a late night out.
  • Hill trails south of town are poorly marked and slippery after rain: take a map and boots.
  • Coastal weather changes fast; wind and rain are normal even in summer.
