Tixkokob is a Maya town of about 11,000 people 20 km east of Mérida, known for hammock weaving and panuchos. The draw is small and close: a colonial church, a working henequin hacienda, the Aké ruins and cenotes. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night stop from Mérida rather than a base.

Getting around

The town is a small grid and walking covers the centre in 10–15 minutes. Moto-taxis (tuk-tuk) run short hops in town from about M$15 and wait near the main square and the Tren Maya station. For Aké, the haciendas and outlying cenotes you need a car, taxi or tour.

Watch out

Safety

Tixkokob is a quiet small town and the usual advice applies: use taxis or moto-taxis at night, keep to lit streets, and treat cenotes and ruins as unguarded sites with uneven ground.
  • Cenotes on private land: ask the owner before swimming, and expect a small fee.
  • Some cenotes near town are dry or not good for swimming; the better ones are further out.
  • Afternoon heat and humidity: carry water and plan outdoor sights for the morning.
  • Hammock prices vary widely by size and thread; compare two or three workshops before buying.
