Tixkokob
Go for one night as a Mérida side trip: hammock workshops, panuchos and Aké ruins, 20 km east of Mérida on MEX-180.
Tixkokob is a Maya town of about 11,000 people 20 km east of Mérida, known for hammock weaving and panuchos. The draw is small and close: a colonial church, a working henequin hacienda, the Aké ruins and cenotes. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night stop from Mérida rather than a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- Cenotes on private land: ask the owner before swimming, and expect a small fee.
- Some cenotes near town are dry or not good for swimming; the better ones are further out.
- Afternoon heat and humidity: carry water and plan outdoor sights for the morning.
- Hammock prices vary widely by size and thread; compare two or three workshops before buying.
Tixkokob is a quiet small town and the usual advice applies: use taxis or moto-taxis at night, keep to lit streets, and treat cenotes and ruins as unguarded sites with uneven ground.
