Lucknow is the capital of Uttar Pradesh and the old capital of Awadh, built by the Nawabs along the Gomti river. Its monuments — Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, the Residency — sit in a tight cluster west of the centre, while the food, the chikankari embroidery and the Urdu poetry culture are the real reasons to stay. Two nights covers the core; the city is a stop on the Delhi–Varanasi rail line, not a destination on its own.

Getting around

Sights are spread out, so use motorised transport. The Metro Red Line runs north–south through Charbagh and the airport; auto-rickshaws and cycle rickshaws cover the rest. Agree the fare before you get in — drivers are persistent and often quote inflated fares to visitors.

Watch out

Safety

Lucknow is generally safe for visitors by day; the real risks are traffic, summer heat, aggressive rickshaw pricing and pickpocketing in crowded bazaars. Keep valuables out of sight and avoid unlit areas after dark.
  • Auto and rickshaw drivers are persistent and often quote inflated fares to visitors: fix the price first.
  • Traffic is chaotic; hiring a car with a local driver is safer than self-driving.
  • Bara Imambara's labyrinth: lone couples are not admitted without a guide, and shoes must be left outside (a small fee to watch them).
  • Summer heat from April is severe; plan indoor or early-morning sightseeing.
  • Foreigner ticket prices at monuments are much higher than the Indian rate — carry small notes.
