Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Weinheim is a small Bergstraße town 15 km north of Heidelberg, on one of Germany's warmest slopes. The Altstadt is flat and walkable from the station; the draw is the climb to the Windeck and Wachenburg ruins and the beer garden in the Windeck courtyard. Trains and the RNV 5 tram make it an easy add-on to a Heidelberg or Mannheim base.

Getting around

The Altstadt sits 300 m from the station along Bahnhofstraße to Hauptstraße, all on foot. Regional trains (RB/RE) and RNV tram 5 link Weinheim with Heidelberg (about 20 min by train, 40 min by tram) and Mannheim (about 20 min by train, 35 min by tram). VRN zone tickets and day passes cover trains, trams and buses; buy by zone.

Watch out

Safety

Weinheim is a low-risk small town; the real issues are forest-path footing on the castle climb, seasonal closures, and tram or train tickets bought by the wrong zone.
  • The climb to Windeck is about 300 m of ascent on forest paths: trainers, not sandals.
  • The Windeck beer garden opens in fine weather only, roughly Tue–Sun from 17:00 and Sun/holidays from 10:00.
  • Waidsee charges a day entrance fee (about €4 (≈ US$5)) and is seasonal.
  • Miramar is a big spa and pool complex with timed entry pricing (about €20.90 (≈ US$25) for 4 h); it is not a cheap swim.
  • Some listed restaurants and bars change hands or close: check opening days before walking out.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for FRA: last trains to Weinheim, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: station–Bahnhofstraße–Hauptstraße, Marktplatz, Schloss and Schlosspark, Windeck and Wachenburg.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Windeck beer garden, Waidsee, Miramar, Exotenwald) and eat pages with closing days.
  4. Hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
