  • South America ↗Above 2,500 m (Bogotá, Quito, Cusco, La Paz) keep the first day light; sleep lower where you can (Sacred Valley before Cusco) and descend if headache comes with vomiting or confusion.
  • South America ↗A yellow fever certificate is required on arrival in French Guiana, and asked for on some routes into Bolivia, Paraguay, Suriname and Guyana, or when arriving from Amazon areas — vaccinate at least 10 days before travel and carry the card.
  • South America ↗Overnight buses are the norm in Argentina, Chile and Peru, but pick top-tier companies and keep valuables on your body; on-board thefts from overhead racks are the common loss.
  • Uruguay ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Uruguay's Ministry of Foreign Affairs or a Uruguayan consulate; ferry passengers from Buenos Aires clear both countries' immigration at the terminal.
  • Uruguay ↗Buenos Aires–Colonia and Buenos Aires–Montevideo ferries sell out on long weekends and in summer: book ahead.
  • Uruguay ↗Pay restaurants, hotels and car hire with a foreign-issued card: non-residents get the 22% VAT (IVA) removed on restaurants and car hire roughly 15 November – 30 April, and on lodging — check the current season's rules.

Bella Unión sits at Uruguay's northwestern tip, on Route 3 by the Brazil border and across the Uruguay River from Argentina. Its draw is duty-free shops open to foreign passports, plus gaucho country and a quiet riverside park. It is a shopping and border town, not a sightseeing base: most travellers pass through in a day or skip it unless they are crossing to Barra do Quaraí or Monte Caseros.

Watch out

Safety

Bella Unión is a small, quiet border town and generally safe by day. The real risks are summer heat, mosquitoes, and cross-border trips: carry your passport and check boat and bridge rules before you go.
  • Duty-free prices are not always lower than in Argentina or Brazil: compare before you buy.
  • Bring your passport: free shops sell to foreign passports only.
  • No bridge to Monte Caseros, Argentina: the crossing is by small boat on weekdays, about 10 minutes.
  • Summer heat and mosquitoes near the river; carry water and repellent.
  • Some shops close on Sundays or keep shorter hours: check before you go.
