Bella Unión
Go only if you want duty-free shopping or a border hop: one night is enough, and the town is a 6–7 h bus ride from Montevideo.
Bella Unión sits at Uruguay's northwestern tip, on Route 3 by the Brazil border and across the Uruguay River from Argentina. Its draw is duty-free shops open to foreign passports, plus gaucho country and a quiet riverside park. It is a shopping and border town, not a sightseeing base: most travellers pass through in a day or skip it unless they are crossing to Barra do Quaraí or Monte Caseros.
