Newark is a small industrial and residential city in the East Bay, fully surrounded by Fremont and about 20 miles from both Oakland (OAK) and San Jose (SJC) airports. It has no walkable centre and few sights of its own, but it is a practical, cheaper bed base for Fremont, the Dumbarton Bridge and the Peninsula, and it sits on AC Transit with BART one town away. Most travellers pass through; a night or two is enough.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to move around Newark: sights and hotels are spread along Mowry Ave, Newark Blvd and Thornton Ave. AC Transit buses cover the city and link to Fremont BART; the nearest BART station is in Fremont, not Newark. Bikes work well — most streets have lanes and traffic is light.

Safety

Newark is a low-crime suburb and generally safe by day; the real issues are car-dependent streets, empty industrial blocks at night and summer heat on exposed trails. Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars.
  • No walkable downtown: plan on a car, rideshare or bus for every errand.
  • Summer afternoons inland can pass 30 °C; carry water on refuge and farm walks.
  • Some blocks along the I-880 corridor are industrial and empty at night — check the walk from your hotel before booking.
