Pello is a small Tornio river valley town of about 3,500 people on the Swedish border, 120 km north of Tornio and 100 km west of Rovaniemi. It is a road and rail stop, not a sightseeing base: the draw is the river, the border crossing, the Struve and Maupertuis survey points on Kittisvaara, and the Arctic Circle line at Juoksenki. Most travellers pass through in an afternoon or sleep one night on the way north.

Getting around

A car is the practical way to see the municipality: sights are 20 km or more apart and buses are few. The town centre itself is small enough to walk. Taxis are bookable by app or phone. Cross-border walking is possible over the bridge at Pello and, in winter, over the Juoksenki ice road when it is open.

Watch out

Safety

Pello is a quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are winter driving on the E8, cold exposure, and the dark. Tell someone your route if you go onto the river ice or into the fells.
  • The railway halt is a platform with a shed, not a station: no staff, no indoor waiting room.
  • Overnight trains from Helsinki to Kolari that stop here are seasonal, with up to two a day in peak season.
  • There may be no coaches at all from Muonio or Kolari in the north: check before you rely on it.
  • The Juoksenki ice road is a winter-only crossing and only when it is officially open.
  • Mobile coverage is 4G from Elisa and Telia but not DNA in this area; 5G has not reached it.
  • Finnish Customs operates the Pello border crossing by patrol only: make the declaration online if you need to.
