Ylitornio is a small Tornio river municipality in western Finnish Lapland, about 4,000 residents, with one headline sight: Aavasaksa hill, a 242 m viewpoint and UNESCO Struve Geodetic Arc point that has drawn visitors since the 19th century. There is no local bus network, so you need a car or a coach that drops you in the centre. Most travellers pass through on the E8 between Tornio (57 km south) and Rovaniemi, or stop for river fishing and birdwatching lakes in the northeast villages.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are winter driving on icy roads, long distances with no phone signal in the lake villages, and cold exposure if you walk trails unprepared.
  • Distances between sights are long and buses are scarce: without a car you will miss most of the municipality.
  • The Aavasaksa border crossing to Sweden (Övertorneå) is patrol-only since 2016; do customs declarations online.
  • Aavasaksa ski slope opens irregularly January–April: check before you drive up.
  • Many museums and cafés open only in summer or by request: call ahead.
  • Winter driving needs winter tyres Dec–Feb and headlights always on.
