Durango is the capital of Durango state, a highland city at about 1,890 m with the largest catalogue of historic buildings in northern Mexico and a UNESCO listing on the Camino Real de Tierra Adentro. It is a walking city: the centre, the cable car and the film sets west of town fill two days. Most travellers reach it by air from Mexico City or by bus, not by train.

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. City buses cost about M$10 and are colour-coded by direction; taxis use meters and are cheap by Mexican standards, and Uber and DiDi operate. The bus station sits 4–5 km northeast of the centre.

Villa del Oeste runs staged shootouts several times a day and is closed Mondays; Chupaderos is about 1 km (0.6 mi) away and walkable.

Safety

Durango is a calm, walkable city by day and early evening; the usual precautions apply after dark outside the centre, and intercity roads in the Sierra should be driven in daylight.
  • Summer afternoons in June–August are hot and wet; plan indoor sights for mid-afternoon.
  • Winter nights drop near freezing: bring a layer even in a warm-weather trip.
  • The baseball stadium uses a rechargeable payment card; budget for the card as well as the ticket.
  • Some museum and park websites listed locally are dead; confirm hours before you go.
