Give Sundsvall one full day: the stone centre, Norra Berget and a walk on Södra Berget. Two nights if you want the Botnialeden trail or a ski morning.
Sundsvall is a coastal timber-and-paper town on the Bothnian Sea, halfway up Sweden's east coast on the E4 and the main north line. After the 1888 fire it was rebuilt in stone — the Stenstaden — so the centre is a compact grid of art nouveau blocks you can walk in an afternoon. The hills, the harbour and the forest trails are the rest of the trip.

- The airport shuttle bus no longer runs: plan a taxi or the Timrå bus-and-taxi combination.
- Central station has ticket machines but no staffed ticket desk — buy in advance for the best fare.
