Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Germany ↗Germany is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Germany ↗Nazi symbols and gestures are criminal offences, including as jokes or souvenirs.
  • Germany ↗Many city centres are low-emission zones: a car needs the right sticker (Umweltplakette) to enter.

Kaiserslautern is a working town of about 100,000 in Rhineland-Palatinate, nicknamed K-Town, with a large American military presence at nearby Ramstein and Landstuhl. The centre holds a small cluster of sights — the Stiftskirche, the Casimir castle ruins, the Japanese Garden and the Gartenschau — and the Palatinate Forest starts a short walk from the middle of town. Most travellers pass through on the train between Mannheim and Saarbrücken, or use it as a cheap, quiet base for the forest, the wine villages and day trips to Heidelberg or Speyer.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City centre (Altstadt and around the Hbf)

Walkable to the Stiftskirche, castle ruins and most restaurants; best for one night with bags.

Near the university (south of the centre)

Quieter, cheaper rooms; 10–15 min by bus from the station.

Ramstein and Landstuhl

Only if you have business at the bases; otherwise the centre is better value.

Watch out

Safety

Kaiserslautern is a calm, ordinary German town and feels safe by day and evening. The real risks are steep streets on a bike, sparse night buses at weekends, and bars or shops near the bases quoting dollar prices at a poor rate: ask the total in euros first.
  • Some streets are steep; plan a flatter route if you are cycling.
  • Night buses run mostly at weekends only.
  • Many places near the bases quote prices in dollars as well as euros; check the rate before you pay.
  • The Gartenschau runs April–October and the Japanese Garden closes on Mondays — check dates before you travel.
